The Mission of Fukui Prefectural Environmental Radiation Research and Monitoring Center

The fundamental purpose of the environmental radiation monitoring is to confirm that the public dose from a nuclear power plant is lower than the public dose limit (1mSv/year), to keep health and the security of the people living around the nuclear power plant.
The radioactive substance from a nuclear power plant is regulated by law strictly, and the Fukui Prefectural Environmental Radiation Research and Monitoring Center confirms environmental security through the radiation monitoring and the environmental radioactivity measurement in the surrounding area of the nuclear power plant. Examples of the research are as below.

  • Continuous monitoring of the atmospheric radiation dose rate and the radioactive dust concentration
  • Investigation of accumulated atmospheric radiation dose(accumulative dose)
  • Radioactivity measurement of the fall out, such as aerosol, rainfall, etc.
  • Radioactivity measurement of the land sample, such as city water, stream water, soil, plant, crop, etc.
  • Radioactivity measurement of the sea sample, such as sea water, seabed soil, seaweed, seafood, etc.

The main office in Tsuruga city is in charge of the continuous monitoring while Fukui Analytical Office in Fukui city does the accumulated dose measurement and the radioactivity measurement.
Moreover, the Monitoring Center endeavors to strengthen the emergency monitoring structure with nuclear facility managers to prepare for a nuclear accident.
Furthermore, the Monitoring Center continues studying the radiation monitoring and improvement of analytical skill of radiation.
